In going through my junk mail I noticed I received a response to an email I sent to Michael R. Bloomberg Mayor of New York City.

My Email read:

Dear Mr. Bloomberg.

In a recent interview you are quoted as saying that the 2nd amendment insures an individual right to keep and bear arms and you are obviously a learned man with an understanding that the last and most important purpose of the 2nd Amendment is as a defense against tyranny. You have taken an oath to uphold and defend the constitution. The result of combining those 3 facts makes your assault on the rights of law abiding citizens to own firearms nothing short of TREASON. I hope you spend the rest of your life ashamed that you took the easy way out and sold out your values and your country. I won't trade liberty for safety and you shouldn't either.

Mayor Bloomberg's response:

Dear Mr. Burris:

Thank you for your recent letter.  Like many cities across America, New York faces a serious problem: criminals with easy access to illegal guns. That is why we have adopted a comprehensive three-pronged strategy of tougher enforcement, new legislation, and innovative litigation - and our strategy is working.  This year, both crime and murder rates are down significantly, even as crime has been rising in the rest of the nation.

About 90 percent of guns used in crimes in New York City come from out-of-state, and so we have a responsibility to work with other mayors to find innovative new ways to crack down on illegal gun trafficking. That is why I have helped to create a new national coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.  In just a year, the coalition has grown from 15 to more than 200 mayors from across the country, and from both major political parties.

The fight against illegal guns is not about the Second Amendment.  It is about enforcing the law and keeping illegal guns out of the hands of criminals.  Our Administration will continue working to do everything possible to keep all New Yorkers - and the police officers who protect us every day - safe, and to continue making the safest big city in America even safer. While we may not agree on this issue, I appreciate your sharing your point of view with me.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Bloomberg

Mayor

Today after finding the email that had gotten routed to my Junk Box I responded:

On May14 your email stated, "The fight against illegal guns is not about the Second Amendment. It is about enforcing the law and keeping illegal guns out of the hands of criminals." The logic of making all guns illegal as has been the approach of your administration does not focus on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals but rather focuses on turning law abiding citizens into criminals. The result is a potential increase in "illegal activity" because people refuse to give up thier god given right to defend themselves. Your actions are all about 2nd Amendment freedoms. You should fight crime instead of making more criminals. How about a mayors coilition against crime?

I will wait for The Mayors response and post it here when it arrives.
