say we are out on a camping/fishing trip, and we r not too far from civilization, but say you have to stay out in the wilderness over night due to the fact that u lost track of time and it got dark. now if you could only take one piece of equipment with you what would it be and why? |

Patriotman, if you were looking for a serious answer to your question here it is.
The What:
A Kabar D2 Tool steel 7 inch fighting knife with partial seration in Zytel sheath.
The why:
In any environment from cold, to warm, from safe to dangerous, for only an overnight stay you really have only two worrys. Maintaining your body temperature and your safety. If the outside temperature is a concern I would use the knife and one of my boot laces to help build a bow drill to start a fire and then potentially a very light shelter. If teperature is not a concern I would feel more secure with the knife tied on to the end of a 3 foot pole in case I need it to defend myself but to be honest thats not very likely in most environments. Depending on the area and how many dangerous tracks I see if any I might climb a tree to wait till morning but since I tend to live a little less cautious than most I would probably just look for a few leaves to insulate me from the ground pile them up beside a 6 to 8 inch tree sit down on them lean up against the tree with my "poled knife" and wait for morning.

One piece of equipment - my interpretation.
I NEVER leave camp without a small kit I've made. I don't even go outside of camp to water the weeds without it.
In that kit: Altoids can fishing kit. 2 - 1 qt and 1 - 1 gallon zip lock bags enough water purification tablets to purify 3 gallons of water a space rescue BAG 40 feet of 7 strand parachute cord. magnesium bar with striker and a 4" section of hacksaw blade dummy corded to it An altoids can full of vaselined cotton balls A Fox 40 Pealess whistle about 20 feet of good quality duct tape wound on a plastic card. a WWII type canteen cup A Victorinox Officer pocket knife a small fixed blade hunting knife (about 3" blade) a single AAA battery powered LED light
That is the ONE piece of equipment I ALWAYS carry when out in the boonies. (I have 5 - one for each vehicle, one for my wife, one for me, and a spare).
The contents have evolved over the years. I used to carry a 3600 calorie Datrex/Mainstay type ration bar - now I don't. I used to carry a single AA battery powered maglight - now I don't I'm looking a changing the kit bag to a different one with a pouch for a 1 liter water bottle.
You get the idea.
